LJ Idol Week 14

Just one match
Just one match is all I need
All I need to build a roaring fire in these woods
I’ll be warm then.
I’ll be warm then.

By the lake and by the blueberry bushes
There’s a dock where we can dip our toes
Sit in silence and see the stars after the sunset
And then sing around the campfire for a while

Just one melody
Just one melody is all I need
All I need to keep a song in my heart
I’ll be warm then.
I’ll be warm then.

By the lake and by the blueberry bushes
There’s a dock where we can dip our toes
Sit in silence and see the stars after the sunset
And then sing around the campfire for a while

Just one friend
Just one friend is all I need
All I need to sing along and for some company
I’ll be warm then.
I’ll be warm then.

By the lake and by the blueberry bushes
There’s a dock where we can dip our toes
Sit in silence and see the stars after the sunset
And then sing around the campfire for a while

Just one day.
Just one day is all I need.
All I need to keep the memory alive.
I’ll be warm then.
I’ll be warm then.

But you're a ghost now
I'm not even sure that you really existed
Memories stay but soon
those will vanish, too

Will it be long before Williamsburg
is more than your home?
Will I stop at the museum without
thinking of kissing you?
Or wondering if you're packing trucks in the rain?

But you're a ghost now
I'm not even sure that you really existed
Memories stay but soon
those will vanish, too

Will ice hockey always remind me
of your bad tattoo?
Will I stop wondering if your daughter
is reading those books?
And god fucking damnit,
when I hear Regina sing...

But you're a ghost now
I'm not even sure that you really existed
Memories stay but soon
those will vanish, too

Prompt: Open Topic

I don't want to hustle
I just want to sing
take these words and melodies
and not worry about the rest

It's not about fame
I'm not trying to get discovered
I'm trying to discover
if I've got guts

I don't want to hustle
I just want to sing
take these words and melodies
and not worry about the rest

My currency is smiles
I trade in thousands every day
A smile satisfies more
than a candy bar, mm-mmm

I don't want to hustle
I just want to sing
take these words and melodies
and not worry about the rest

Think beyond fortune
Think beyond YouTube views
Can't you value this because
I made you dance on the train

I don't want to hustle
I just want to sing
take these words and melodies
and not worry about the rest

My currency is smiles
I trade in thousands every day
A smile satisfies more,
more, more, mm-mmm-mm

Prompt: Getting to Carnegie Hall

Verse 1:
When I was 21
My life had just begun
But I feared I'd have no one
My friend said don't be scared
I'm not going any where for all your life

Chorus:
On a front porch
On the streets of Brooklyn
We made a pact then
For golden years

If we're not married
By the time we're 50
Let's sit on the front porch
Just drinking whiskey

Oh if we're not married
By the time we're 50
Let's sit drinking whiskey
Til the day we die

Verse 2:
When I was 32
My life had come unglued
But after a year or two
My pal said you're more you
Than I've seen in years
So just dry up those
Tears about that man

Verse 3:
When I am 43
I'm not sure where I'll be
But least I know for sure
That in a decade more
If I don't settle down
I've got a lifetime backup plan

Prompt: Front Porch

The world is crumbling
and leaders are putting up walls
And all I want to write songs about is you

That is all too big
Too messy
Unclear
I'm not throwing away my shot
with you my dear

Resistance seems futile without
nights in your arms
I'll soldier on but I'd rather fight by your side

That is all too big
Too messy
Unclear
I'm not throwing away my shot
with you my dear

Is my first battle one to
get you back?
Or can I forget you and just start tearing down walls?

I hope you don't resist me
Let's resist together
I hope you don't resist me
Let's resist together

That is all too big
Too messy
Unclear
I'm not throwing away my shot
with you my dear

You cut me off again
Put down every fucking word
I said
But I put up my hand
And got my point across

Don't tell me to smile
Don't take up my space
Look me in the eye when you
Try to tell me a woman's place

I started to walk away
But I turned on my heel
And spun
Cuz you
You can't make me run

Don't tell me to smile
Don't take up my space
Look me in the eye when you
Try to tell me a woman's place

You think I will bend
Be sweet and so demure
I'm sure
But little did you know
What's in store for you

Don't tell me to smile
Don't take up my space
Look me in the eye when you
Try to tell me a woman's place

Prompt: "Heel turn"

This week had the added challenge of fighting off a cold plus a dislocated wrist on my strumming/dominant/mouse clicking hand, so I couldn't use my uke and getting a whole song done was painful. But! I pushed myself and tried out something else cool - a clip of what the song could sound like using only my voice, including harmony and a bit of vocal percussion. Sorry that it's not the complete audio this week! Thanks for understanding.

The Great One

I'm not standing where I've been
I'm headed where I'm going next

I've got goals
I've got goals
And I'm goin' there

When I'm walking
I'm going real far

I'm workin so hard
Not sleeping that much
But I've got goals

Prompt: "I don't skate to where the puck is. I skate to where the puck is going to be."

P.S. I accidentally reversed the term (here it's "backbrush" rather than "brushback") but there wasn't time to re-record, so it is what it is!

I thought I kept my distance
Thought there was plenty of room
Between us
Thought I kept my heart safe
But it turns out you threw a
Backbrush pitch

My head is still spinning
That near miss was a warning
To protect my heart
Protect, protect my heart

I thought I kept my distance
Thought there was plenty of room
Between us
Thought I kept my heart safe
But it turns out you threw a
Backbrush pitch

Don't be afraid to step
Right back up
To the plate
Don't be afraid to
Try again
It's just a little heartbreak

I thought I kept my distance
Thought there was plenty of room
Between us
Thought I kept my heart safe
But it turns out you threw a
Backbrush pitch

That One Friend [Lyrics]

You've got no filter
You've got no filter

You're just playing devil's advocate
And you're just saying that's all
You're just well actually you're saying that you're smarter than me
But you just don't see it

Didn't mean to
Hurt you I'm just
Being honest, that's all

You're just playing devil's advocate
And you're just saying that's all
You're just well actually you're saying that you're smarter than me
But you just don't see it

The devil doesn't need
any help he's
doing just fine on his own

You're just playing devil's advocate
And you're just saying that's all
You're just well actually you're saying that you're smarter than me
But you just don't see it

You've got no filter
You've got no filter

You just don't see it
